(07 Mar 2025) MOGADISHU (Halqabsi News) — The Somali government has introduced stringent new security measures at Aden Adde International Airport, including a ban on all weapons and military vehicles within the facility, following heightened warnings of potential terrorist attacks.

Information Minister Daud Aweys Jama announced the decision on Thursday, after the Council of Ministers approved the measures during an emergency session. “This ban is critical to safeguarding travelers and reinforcing security protocols,” Jama said, emphasizing that the move aims to prevent firearms from entering the airport’s perimeter.

The decision comes amid escalating security concerns. Over the past fortnight, multiple intelligence reports warned of possible attacks targeting the airport, a vital hub for international travel and aid operations in Somalia. On Tuesday, the U.S. Embassy in Mogadishu issued an alert urging American citizens to avoid the airport and other crowded areas, citing “credible threats.”

Hours after the U.S. advisory, Qatar Airways and Turkish Airlines temporarily suspended flights to Mogadishu. While neither airline explicitly linked the suspensions to the security warnings, the timing has raised questions among aviation analysts. A Turkish Airlines spokesperson stated the pause was due to “operational reviews,” without elaborating.

Aden Adde International Airport, guarded by African Union peacekeepers and Somali forces, has long been a focal point for security efforts in a country grappling with insurgency by the al-Shabab militant group. The Islamist group, which has ties to al-Qaeda, has repeatedly targeted government installations and public spaces.

The Somali government reiterated its commitment to protecting critical infrastructure. “We are working closely with international partners to neutralize threats and ensure the safety of all passengers,” Jama added.

The airport serves as a lifeline for Somalia’s humanitarian aid and diplomatic missions.

Al-Shabab has carried out several high-profile attacks in Mogadishu since losing territorial control in 2011, including a 2022 siege near the airport.

Security forces have increased patrols around the airport, and travelers are advised to arrive early for enhanced screening. Turkish Airlines and Qatar Airways’ flight suspensions remain in effect indefinitely.
