(13 Mar 2025) MOGADISHU (Halqabsi News) – The United States and Turkey have vowed to bolster military and humanitarian support for Somalia’s ongoing offensive against Al-Shabaab in Hirshabelle, a strategic federal state in central Somalia, as government forces intensify efforts to reclaim militant-held territory.
In high-level discussions this week, U.S. Ambassador Richard H. Riley and Turkish Ambassador Alper Aktasseparately assured Hirshabelle President Ali Guudlaawe of their countries’ commitment to defeating the militant group.
During a virtual meeting, Ambassador Riley and Colonel Norris, head of the U.S. Somalia Operations Coordination Team (a military advisory unit), pledged continued military assistance, including intelligence sharing, equipment, and troop training for Somali forces.
“Your leadership inspires confidence. We stand with Hirshabelle in this fight,” Riley stated, praising recent gains by Somali troops.
In a separate phone call, Turkish Ambassador Aktas extended condolences for fallen soldiers and pledged Ankara’s support for wounded personnel. “Turkey, as a brotherly nation, salutes the bravery of Somali forces and will continue to stand with them,” President Guudlaawe quoted Aktas as saying.
Both nations play a crucial role in Somalia’s security landscape, with the U.S. and Turkey providing air support, funding, and specialized training for the Somali National Army (SNA) and its elite forces.
The pledges come as SNA troops and Macawiisley militias advance on Al-Shabaab strongholds near Jowhar, Hirshabelle’s capital. The region, a key agricultural zone, is vital to disrupting the militants’ extortion-based economy.
President Guudlaawe expressed gratitude, stating, “This support reinforces our determination to free every village from Al-Shabaab’s grip.”
However, humanitarian workers report that over 10,000 civilians have been displaced in Hirshabelle this month, with roadside bombs hindering aid access.
