According to a statement released by the U.S. Department of State Spokesperson Tammy Bruce, Secretary Rubio expressed Washington’s appreciation for Kenya’s continued engagement in Somalia, where the country plays a pivotal role in supporting peace initiatives and stabilisation efforts.
The two leaders discussed the latest developments in Somalia, where the ongoing fight against terrorism and efforts toward political stability remain critical priorities for both nations. Secretary Rubio underscored the importance of regional collaboration to ensure lasting peace in Somalia.
In addition, the conversation touched on the situation in South Sudan and the urgent need to resolve the protracted conflicts in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo and Sudan. Both leaders affirmed their commitment to working together to address these complex regional crises.
Kenya is a key player in East Africa’s security architecture and contributes troops to the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), supporting the Somali government’s fight against Al-Shabaab militants and pacifying the country.
The United States remains a major partner in Somalia’s stabilisation efforts, providing humanitarian aid, supporting security reforms, and backing regional diplomacy aimed at fostering peace and development across the Horn of Africa.
