(16 Apr 2025) MOGADISHU (Halqabsi News) – Former Prime Minister Abdi Farah Shirdon, known as “Saacid,” has officially declared his intent to compete for Somalia’s presidency in the highly anticipated elections set for May 2026.

Shirdon, who served as Prime Minister from October 2012 to December 2013, announced shortly after returning to Mogadishu, the nation’s capital, where he received a warm welcome from diverse community segments, including political leaders, traditional elders, youth, and women.

“It is now time for us to capitalise on our greatest assets—our people, our fertile lands, and our extensive coastline,” Shirdon stated.

He also announced plans to establish a new political party named Nagaad, describing it as a vehicle for uniting Somalis toward sustainable peace, stability, and economic growth.

“In the coming days, we will officially unveil the party and initiate nationwide consultations to collectively shape our shared future,” he added.

Analysts have indicated that Shirdon’s candidacy may introduce significant dynamics into the electoral landscape, potentially challenging incumbent President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, as well as former Presidents Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed, Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo, and former Prime Minister Hassan Ali Khaire.

Shirdon’s announcement comes as Somalia gears up for what is anticipated to be a competitive presidential election scheduled for May 2026.
