(01 Apr 2025) MOGADISHU (Halqabsi News) – Four members of the militant group Al-Shabaab have voluntarily surrendered to security forces operating in Baidoa, the interim administrative capital of South West State. According to state media, the defectors confessed to having joined the group from the Bay, Bakol, and Juba regions. They admitted to taking part in several militant operations prior to abandoning the group.
Their defection adds to a growing wave of recent surrenders, largely driven by intensified military offensives targeting the group and the increasingly harsh living conditions faced by its rank-and-file members.
Security officials have welcomed the surrender, noting that it reflects the effectiveness of ongoing counterterrorism efforts as well as President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s amnesty offer for defectors.
