(26 Apr 2025) MOGADISHU (Halqabsi News) – Tensions are again flaring in Somalia’s Gedo region, particularly in Beled Hawo, amid new friction between the Jubbaland administration and the Federal Government.

The latest escalation follows reports that Jubbaland President Ahmed Madobe has sent officials and Darawiish forces to Beled Hawo. Local sources describe growing unease and opposing military movements around the town.

Federal MP Nuur Ahmed Diriye, who hails from Gedo and serves as Deputy Chair of Parliament’s Security and Internal Affairs Committee, issued a stern warning on Saturday, accusing Madobe of attempting to seize control of the region.

“Those forces deployed to Beledxaawo must withdraw. This town does not need war or conflict,” Diriye said. He questioned why other towns were not similarly targeted, suggesting a deliberate focus on Beledxaawo.

Diriye also called on federal security forces stationed across Gedo to uphold their duty to maintain peace and stability. “As the Federal Government, we recognise the troops present in every district. They are responsible for ensuring security,” he stressed.

The standoff comes as Somalia heads into a critical election season, with both the Federal Government and Jubbaland vying for influence in Gedo, a region seen as pivotal for upcoming electoral processes, particularly in ensuring one-person, one-vote participation.
