(27 Apr 2025) MOGADISHU (Halqabsi News) – Heavy fighting erupted overnight in Garbahaarey, the capital of Somalia’s Gedo region, after Al-Shabaab militants launched a coordinated assault on a government military base near the town, local sources confirmed.
The militants targeted the army outpost with an initial barrage, triggering a fierce, hours-long firefight. Residents reported hearing heavy gunfire but could not immediately verify casualty figures.
Security officials said government forces successfully repelled the attack, killing several militants and regaining full control of the contested area. “Our troops put up strong resistance and foiled the Al-Shabaab assault,” one military official said.
The situation in Garbahaarey remains tense, with government troops conducting sweeps and patrols around the town to prevent further attacks.
Al-Shabaab has been regrouping near Baardheere and Garbahaarey in recent weeks, prompting increased vigilance among security forces.
The Gedo region remains vulnerable to insurgent attacks, compounded by an ongoing political rift between the Federal Government and Jubbaland authorities, which has further complicated security efforts.
