(23 Apr 2025) MOGADISHU (Halqabsi News) – Voter registration for Somalia’s first one-person, one-vote elections in over five decades continues smoothly in Mogadishu, as thousands of residents flock to registration centres across the capital.
The campaign, officially launched in Shangani district on April 15, has since expanded to several other districts. As of Wednesday, registration activities are underway in Waabari, Hamar Jajab, and Abdiaziz districts. Earlier, it was also rolled out in Shibis, Hamarweyne, and Bondhere.
“This is the first direct public vote since 1969, and the high turnout reflects the excitement and readiness of citizens to take part in shaping their future,” the National Independent Electoral Commission said in a statement.
The commission praised the turnout, noting that far more people than anticipated had shown up to register. The current phase of voter registration in Banadir region is scheduled to continue until May 15, with additional districts expected to open in the coming days.
