(14 June 2025) MOGADISHU (Halqabsi News) — Heavy fighting has erupted between Al-Shabaab militants and Ethiopian troops serving as part of an African Union mission in Bay region, with unconfirmed casualties reported on both sides.
The clashes began overnight when militants launched a major assault on an Ethiopian military outpost on the outskirts of the town of Diinsoor. The fighting, which involved heavy weaponry, reportedly lasted for several hours.
In a statement, Al-Shabaab claimed responsibility for the attack and asserted it had killed several soldiers, a claim that has not been independently verified.
A Somali security official in the region confirmed the incident, stating that Somali and Ethiopian forces were working to secure the area. The Ethiopian military reportedly responded to the assault with heavy artillery fire.
The attack is part of a recent surge in activity by Al-Shabaab in the Bay and Bakool regions. Al-Shabaab maintains a significant presence in the rural areas surrounding Diinsoor, where it continues to challenge the authority of the Somali government and its international partners.
