(16 June 2025) GAROWE (Halqabsi News) – The leader of the Islamic State affiliate in Somalia, Abdulkadir Mumin, has fled his long-time mountain hideout amid a sustained military offensive by Puntland security forces, officials announced on Monday.
General Mahmoud Ahmed Faadhigo, spokesperson for Operation Hillaac (Lightning), confirmed during a press briefing that the information was verified through international intelligence cooperation. He described Mumin’s flight as a significant turning point in the campaign against the extremist group.
“Our operations are relentless. His escape confirms the immense pressure ISIS is facing,” said General Faadhigo.
The announcement follows Puntland President Said Abdullahi Deni’s declaration on Sunday marking the successful conclusion of the third phase of Operation Hillaac. The six-month campaign has reportedly cleared 98% of the rugged Cal-Miskaad mountain range of militants, inflicting heavy losses and resulting in the capture of multiple fighters, including foreign nationals.
Officials added that Mumin’s deputy, Abdirahman Faahiye Isse Mahamoud — who is responsible for the group’s local operations — is now believed to be in hiding in the same mountainous region. The forthcoming fourth phase of the offensive will focus on eliminating remaining fugitives from the group.
