(11 June 2025) MOGADISHU (Halqabsi News) – At least two civilians were killed and three others injured on Tuesday night after a cargo truck reportedly suffered a brake failure and rammed into a three-wheeled Bajaj motorcycle at the Afarta Darjiin intersection, which links the districts of Yaqshid and Shangaani in Mogadishu.
The incident occurred during peak evening traffic hours, causing panic among pedestrians and motorists. According to eyewitnesses, the truck lost control and struck a Bajaj travelling towards Sanca, crushing the driver and a passenger onboard.
“It was horrifying. The truck sped forward uncontrollably and smashed into the Bajaj. Two people died instantly,” a bystander told Somali Cable. “People rushed to the scene to help, and it took some time to remove the victims from beneath the truck.”
The three injured were quickly transported to nearby hospitals for treatment. The identities of the deceased have not yet been made public, and authorities have yet to release an official statement regarding the driver or whether any arrests have been made.
Locals say the truck was heavily loaded, and emergency responders had to offload the cargo to retrieve the bodies.
This tragic accident is the latest in a string of traffic incidents across Mogadishu, often involving aged cargo vehicles operating with minimal regulation. The lack of stringent road safety enforcement and mechanical inspections continues to pose a significant risk to public safety in the capital.
