(10 Feb 2025) BOSASO (Halqabsi News) — Security forces in Somalia’s Puntland state have captured new territory from ISIS-affiliated militants in an ongoing military operation, officials say.
The offensive, which has intensified in recent days, has forced ISIS fighters to retreat from battle zones in the Bari region.
Puntland military officials said some militants have fled towards Somaliland and southern Somalia, while others have been captured in rural Puntland and at checkpoints.
The Deputy Police Chief of Puntland warned that fleeing ISIS operatives could pose a security threat to other regions of Somalia, urging authorities to remain vigilant.
Since the start of the offensive in the Cali Miskaad Mountains, Puntland forces and ISIS militants have engaged in heavy fighting, with casualties reported on both sides. The operation is continuing as security forces seek to dismantle the group’s presence in the region.
