(11 Feb 2025) BOSASO (Halqabsi News) — Puntland security forces say they have repelled a major attack by ISIS militants in the Bari region of northeastern Somalia.
The assault, which began early on Tuesday morning, involved suicide bombers and armed fighters targeting Puntland forces in Haraaryo, near Toga-Jaceel. The area has been the scene of ongoing clashes between Puntland troops and ISIS.
Sources say the attack was heavily coordinated and involved foreign fighters. A majority of the suicide bombers were reportedly non-Somali.
Puntland authorities confirmed casualties on both sides but said their forces had killed a large number of ISIS fighters. Photographs shared on a Puntland security Telegram channel purportedly showed the bodies of foreign militants, some of whom had detonated explosives and others who had been shot.
Puntland’s Counter-Terrorism Command described the attack as a “failed offensive”. “Our forces once again crushed the ISIS terrorists in Haraaryo, Toga-Jaceel, and the Calmiskaad mountains. Their dead bodies are scattered everywhere,” it said in a statement.
The attack follows an airstrike on ISIS positions in Puntland on Sunday, which reportedly killed 13 foreign militants.
