(27 Apr 2025) MOGADISHU (Halqabsi News) – President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has appointed his son, Abdifatah Hassan, as the new Commander of the Presidential Special Guard, security sources have told Halqabsi News.
Abdifatah Hassan replaces Lieutenant Colonel Maslax Mahamud Mohamed, who has been promoted to lead the broader Presidential Guard Brigade.
Abdifatah Hassan joined the Somali armed forces during his father’s current presidency and has been seen accompanying the president on visits, including to frontline areas. His appointment is seen by some as an effort to bolster the president’s personal security. However, given the experience of more senior officers, questions have been raised.
Previously, President Hassan Sheikh appointed his daughter as a foreign affairs advisor, though she has since been involved in security and intelligence agencies.
Lieutenant Colonel Maslah Mahamud Mohamed took command of the Presidential Guard Brigade earlier this month, succeeding Major General Hassan Aden Dhi’is.
Colonel Maslah has served in the Somali National Armed Forces for over 14 years and was previously the commander of the president’s personal security detail.
The security reshuffle comes as Somalia faces increased threats from al-Shabab militants.
