(06-04-23) MOGADISHU – The U.S. Embassy in Somalia and SIMAD University have partnered to establish the American Corner Mogadishu, aiming to empower Somali youth through entrepreneurship, technology, and innovation. The new center will provide a range of programs, including entrepreneurship training, women’s and girls’ empowerment initiatives, and English language learning resources.
One of the standout features of the American Corner Mogadishu is the eLibraryUSA, a virtual library offering online access to millions of publications, scholarly journals, eBooks, audio, video, and multimedia content from around the world. This resource enables Mogadishu residents to access a wealth of knowledge and information, including popular publications like Harvard Business Review and Foreign Policy.
The American Corner will also host various events and programs, such as Startup Mogadishu, a youth entrepreneurship training program with pitch competitions. This initiative will equip young Mogadishu residents with the skills and knowledge necessary to launch their own businesses and create opportunities for their communities.
Moreover, the American Corner Mogadishu will feature a speaker series on women and youth in business, led by Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI) Regional Leadership Center alumni and SIMAD iLab staff. The YALI Network will also organize events at the American Corner, focusing on innovation and entrepreneurship.
Utilizing alumni and U.S. speakers, the American Corner Mogadishu team plans to host at least five programs per year, covering various topics such as entrepreneurship, innovation, and women’s and girls’ empowerment. The center will also host Somali alumni association meetings and U.S. Embassy information sessions on small grants, studying in the United States, and USG exchange opportunities. Additionally, the Corner will feature virtual or in-person speakers on private U.S. exchange opportunities.
The launch of the American Corner in Mogadishu marks a significant development for the people of Somalia. It will offer valuable resources, training programs, and networking opportunities to help them establish successful businesses and create a brighter future for their communities. Furthermore, the American Corner will serve as a bridge between Somalia and the United States, fostering mutual understanding and cultural exchange between the two nations.
