(01-05-23) MOGADISHU –Mikhail Golovanov, the Ambassador of the Russian Federation to the Federal Republic of Somalia, arrived in Mogadishu on Monday for a series of high-level talks with Abshir Omar Jama (Huruse), the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Federal Republic of Somalia. The discussions focused on Somalia’s bid for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the term 2025-2026, as well as efforts to lift the arms embargo that has been in place for more than 30 years.
During the meetings, Minister Abshir Omar Jama and Ambassador Golovanov also discussed reinforcing existing cooperation between their two countries in the fields of diplomacy, security, and education. Both parties emphasized the importance of cooperation and mutual respect in fostering strong bilateral relations.
Somalia’s candidacy for a non-permanent seat on the UNSC represents the country’s commitment to playing a greater role in international peace and security efforts. As a permanent member of the UNSC, the Russian Federation has a significant influence on the decision-making process, and the visit by Ambassador Golovanov is seen as a positive step in securing support for Somalia’s bid.
Moreover, the discussions on lifting the arms embargo are vital for Somalia, as the country has been restricted since 1992. The embargo has limited the ability of the Somali government to build a capable security apparatus to combat the persistent threat of terrorism and insurgency within its borders. A lifting of the embargo would enable Somalia to equip better and train its security forces, promoting stability in the region.
The meetings between Minister Abshir Omar Jama and Ambassador Mikhail Golovanov are expected to pave the way for further collaboration between the Federal Republic of Somalia and the Russian Federation.
