(08-05-23) BAIDOA – National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA) officials announced the arrest of an Al-Shabaab member in Baydhabo city, who intended to travel to Galkayo city to orchestrate acts of insecurity. The suspect, identified as Ibrahim Abdullahi Jama, also known as Fahad in the terrorist community, was apprehended at Baidoa airport.
Jama revealed that his father arranged for him to join the extremist group, Al-Shabaab, while in Galkayo. He subsequently underwent training in Jilib District, Middle Jubba Region. According to the suspect’s statement, his superiors in Al-Shabaab instructed him to return to his birthplace, Galkayo, to conduct acts of insecurity.
NISA officers operating in the South West region reported that they had been tracking Jama based on intelligence received about his affiliations and intentions. Authorities are now set to hand him over to the country’s judicial system to face charges.
This latest arrest highlights the ongoing efforts of the Somali security forces and their international partners to counter the threat posed by Al-Shabaab in the region. The group has been responsible for numerous attacks in Somalia and neighbouring countries, often targeting civilians, government officials, and international aid workers.
The Somali government, backed by the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) and other international partners, continues to make progress in its fight against the terrorist group, liberating towns and villages from their control. However, the challenge remains to ensure long-term stability and prevent Al-Shabaab’s resurgence in these areas.
