(11-05-23) MOGADISHU – The Somali Police Command has declared its intent to bring those accused of committing crimes in Somalia, but currently residing abroad, to face justice at home. This move aligns with the country’s laws and regulations and comes amidst a broader effort to bolster security and law enforcement in the East African nation.

The Somali Police Force’s commitment to enforcing justice across borders was affirmed today by Brigadier General Sulub Ahmed Firin, the commander of the force, during his visit to the command centre of the Foreign Relations and Interpol department of the Somali Police Force.

“The Somali Police Force will soon present the suspects who have committed crimes in the country so that they can be brought to justice according to the laws and regulations of the country,” reads a statement issued by the Somali Police Command.

The Somali Police Force, as a full member of Interpol, is increasingly leveraging the international police organization’s resources to combat cross-border and international crimes. This cooperation is part of a broader strategy to bolster the capabilities and reach of Somali law enforcement.

Since assuming his role, Commander Sulub has pledged to address internal organizational needs to enhance the efficacy of the Somali police force. The fruits of the new administration’s labour are already palpable in the capital, as it continues to drive reforms and improvements in subordinate centres across the country.

These reforms come at a critical time for Somalia, a country still grappling with the threat posed by the Al-Shabaab militant group. The ongoing efforts to strengthen law enforcement and justice systems are seen as crucial components in the wider fight against such extremist elements.

The Somali government’s commitment to bring suspects residing abroad to face justice at home signifies a significant milestone in the pursuit of accountability. It is a clear message to all who break the law in Somalia: geography will no longer shield them from the arm of justice.
