(01-07-23) MOGADISHU –Somalia’s capital city, Mogadishu, was imbued with an air of nostalgia and national pride on Friday night as it celebrated the 63rd anniversary of the country’s southern regions gaining independence from the Italian colony. The ceremony also commemorated the historic union of the northern and southern regions, a significant event that marked the birth of the Republic of Somalia on July 1, 1960.
His Excellency President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud presided over the flag-raising ceremony that marked the 63rd anniversary of the independence of the Southern Regions and the unity of Somalia’s northern and southern territories. The event was a poignant reminder of the resilience and unity of the Somali people, their rich history and their hopes for a peaceful and prosperous future.
At the stroke of midnight, members of the Somali Armed Forces carried out the symbolic act of raising the national flag. This gesture was done to mimic the precise moment 63 years ago when the flag was first hoisted in Mogadishu on July 1, 1960, signifying the birth of the new republic.
The star-spangled banner of the Republic of Somalia was hoisted proudly against the night sky, amidst the cheers and applause of attendees, many of whom were visibly moved by the historical significance of the event. This public display served not only as a commemoration of the past but also as a pledge for continued unity and progress in the face of ongoing challenges.
While the event was an opportunity for Somalis to pay tribute to their shared history, it was also a reaffirmation of their commitment to the values of unity, independence, and resilience that have been central to their national identity.
As the nation looks forward to the future, the significance of this day will not be forgotten. The 63rd Independence Day serves as a powerful reminder of the journey that the country has made, the hurdles it has overcome, and the potential it holds for future growth and prosperity.
