(20-08-23) GAROWE – Reports emerging from the Sool region on Sunday suggest that the Somaliland army has launched a heavy artillery assault on the city of Lasaanood. Approximately 10 mortar shells, believed to have been fired from the Goojacade station under Somaliland’s control, fell within the city precincts.
Eyewitnesses claim that several of these mortars landed in civilian zones. However, as of now, there are no reports of any casualties resulting from this latest barrage.
This is not the first instance of violence witnessed in recent days. Last Wednesday, a similar artillery strike by Somaliland claimed the life of celebrated Somali poet, Jama Kadiye, along with three other civilians. Kadiye’s tragic death has drawn sharp criticism and has escalated tensions in the region.
The city of Lasaanood has been a flashpoint for clashes, with the traditional SSC forces and the Somaliland administration locked in conflict for the past eight months. As yet, neither side has issued any statement regarding the recent hostilities.
It remains to be seen how this latest incident will affect the already strained relations between the two factions.
