(19-09-23) MOGADISHU — On Monday, an Al-Shabaab militant surrendered to the South West Security forces in the Huddur district of Bakol region. Addow Hassan Abdi, armed with an AK-47 and several magazines, turned himself in to the security forces. He revealed that he had joined the extremist group in 2013 from Huddur and subsequently underwent training in Galgaduud, after which he was integrated into the Jabhat (military) wing.
The defector admitted to participating in a number of military operations against government forces across various regions of the country. He cited his growing disillusionment with the group’s wicked ideology and its atrocities against the Somali people as the primary reasons for his defection.
His decision to leave Al-Shabaab coincides with a recent spike in defections from the militant group. The newly established counterterrorism centre, Tubsan, recently reported that 107 militants have surrendered to government forces since July of this year.
