(06-10-23) MOGADISHU — Government officials in Somalia are accelerating the rollout of a new national identification system, emphasising its importance for governance, social services, and national security.
The Minister of Internal Affairs, Ahmed Macalin Fiqi, and Yusuf Hussein Jimale (Madale), the Governor of Banadir Region and Mayor of Mogadishu, co-chaired a special meeting at the Banadir regional headquarters on Thursday evening. The gathering also included Abduwali Ali Abdulle, the Director of the National Identification and Registration Authority, as well as Mogadishu district commissioners and various officials from the Banadir Region.
The agenda primarily focused on the acquisition and significance of the National Identity Card for Somali citizens. Abdulle stated that the National Identification and Registration Authority is prepared to “serve the Somali citizens efficiently” and stressed the importance of adopting the National Identity Card for confirming citizenship and providing essential services.
Mayor Jimale expressed the Banadir regional administration’s full backing for any system that strengthens both the government and national security. Minister Fiqi further pointed out that the identification system holds special importance for various elements of governance, including the construction of the government, social services, security, and citizenship confirmation.
The meeting marks a significant step toward establishing a more structured governance system in Somalia, where the identification service is expected to play a crucial role in future governmental functions and service delivery.
