(11-10-23) ROME — Speaker of the Federal Republic of Somalia’s Parliament, Mr Sheikh Adan Mohamed Nur Madobe, met with his Italian counterpart, Mr Lorenzo Fonta, in Rome on Wednesday, signalling a renewed push to intensify bilateral ties.
The high-level meeting saw deliberations on advancing cooperation between the two parliaments, with talks of forming a ‘friendship committee’ taking centre stage.
Lauding the dedication of the Somali People’s Assembly during its recent three sessions, Fonta reiterated Italy’s steadfast support in Somalia’s ongoing battle against Al-Shabaab. The dedication and fervour of the Somali Parliament, under Speaker Sheikh Adan’s helm, was notably recognised.
Security concerns, always of high priority, were among the central topics broached. Both leaders also deliberated on harnessing the existing camaraderie between Somalia and Italy, reflecting on the time-tested ties the two nations have enjoyed.
Accompanying Speaker Sheikh Adan were prominent MPs and the Secretary General of the People’s Assembly. An invitation for Fonta to observe Somalia’s progress and the parliament’s initiatives firsthand was extended, to which Fonta voiced his anticipation.
