(14-10-23) MOGADISHU — An explosion targeting Somalia’s K9 unit minesweepers in the Waharadde neighbourhood of Heliwaa district in Mogadishu resulted in two soldier fatalities and three injuries on Saturday, according to security officials.
The blast took place as K9 unit personnel were driving along the road, engaged in minesweeping operations, a critical element in Somalia’s fight against Al-Shabaab militants. The explosion was followed by a bout of heavy gunfire.
Security officials confirmed that the deceased soldiers were transported to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for formal identification, while the injured have been admitted to Medina hospital for medical attention.
The incident occurs amidst a surge in Vehicle-Borne Improvised Explosive Device (VBIED) attacks, underscoring the escalating threat posed by militant groups in the country.
“Minesweeping is vital in our ongoing conflict with Al-Shabaab,” a security official commented, “and this attack only accentuates the persistent risks involved.”
