(16-10-23) GAROWE — Puntland Security Forces (PSF) arrested the head of Al-Shabaab’s survey and intelligence division on Sunday, significantly weakening the militant group’s operational capabilities. The arrest came as part of a coordinated operation in the mountainous Bari region, including areas such as Yucrun, Ceelka dhul, Cascaso, Qarka xabley, Ceelka dhiciro, Gaaca, and Conqor, according to an official PSF statement.
The PSF reported that the operation, which was executed based on “precise intelligence and strong coordination,” resulted in the arrest of three key Al-Shabaab operatives. Besides the intelligence chief, the operation also captured a reporter from the group’s internal reporting team.
The apprehension of these operatives delivers a severe blow to Al-Shabaab, a group responsible for numerous terrorist attacks within Somalia and neighbouring countries. Analysts indicate that the loss of such a vital intelligence figure could have far-reaching implications for the group’s ability to plan and coordinate future attacks.
Government officials praised the PSF for the operation, citing it as a significant achievement in the ongoing fight against Al-Shabaab. Security analysts, however, caution that while the arrest is a positive development, the militant group’s history suggests they may quickly regroup and retaliate.
