(08/11/23) MOGADISHU – This week, Somalia’s government has been actively addressing a series of important incidents and strategic initiatives across the nation. The Speaker of the Somali Parliament, Sheikh Adan Mohamed Nur, together with the Speaker of the Upper House, Abdi Hashi Abdullahi, have urgently called for humanitarian assistance for the victims of devastating floods. Concurrently, the Deputy Prime Minister, Mr Salah Ahmed Jama, declared a state of emergency as El Niño weather patterns have led to fatal flooding, claiming up to 30 lives.
In response to the natural disasters, the National Disaster Management Agency is sending aid to the affected Gedo region, while Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre conducted an inspection of national project progress at the Ministry of Public Works and Housing. This underscores the federal government’s commitment to overseeing essential infrastructural work. Moreover, Mr Salah Ahmed Jama convened meetings both to tackle the immediate flooding crisis and to discuss Somalia’s preparation for the upcoming international climate conference, COP-28, in the United Arab Emirates, highlighting the country’s engagement with global environmental issues.
On the diplomatic front, the Minister of Fisheries and Marine Resources, Mr Ahmed Hassan Adan, engaged in talks with the Acting Ambassador of Norway, Carsten Carlesen, to fortify bilateral ties. Meanwhile, security operations have been a focal point, with the Somali National Army and intelligence services conducting operations against insurgents and capturing a large group of militants intending to join Al-Shabaab. The security forces also thwarted a potential suicide attack in the Banaadir region, underscoring the persistent challenges of maintaining internal security.
Culminating the week’s events, various officials participated in an international summit and commemorations, demonstrating Somalia’s commitment to international cooperation and cultural diplomacy. The country also moves forward with its judicial and reconciliation processes, with key ministries initiating developmental workshops and meetings to bolster legal and reconciliation frameworks.
