Reliable sources indicate the bomber, laden with explosives, targeted new recruits at the Gorgor army unit’s enlistment queue. Although security forces identified the threat, the bomber detonated the explosives before they could intervene.
The attack resulted in at least five injuries. In a distressing twist, the militant faction Al-Shabaab has claimed responsibility, alleging the deaths of 32 young recruits. This assertion, if corroborated, marks a significant escalation in the attack’s gravity. As of now, neither the Somali government nor Turkish officials have issued statements regarding the incident.
Al-Shabaab has a history of targeting military installations in Mogadishu, particularly during recruitment events. Their most notable recent attack was at the Jaalle Siad Military camp in July, where the suicide bomber detonated killing over 40 soldiers. The group is also responsible for multiple attacks on the Nacnaca camp in the Wadajir district, resulting in several recruit casualties.
