(09-12-23) MOGADISHU (HN) — The Federal Parliament of Somalia, in a joint session held at Villa Hargeisa in Mogadishu, on Saturday passed the 2024 Budget Appropriation Act. The meeting, chaired by Upper House speaker, Senator Abdi Hashi Abdullahi, saw a unanimous agreement with the approval of the government’s 2024 fiscal year budget, totalling $179,315,784.
The focus of the session was the crucial second reading of the government’s budget, aimed at bolstering the country’s debt relief efforts. MP Mukhtaar Guled, commenting on the approval, emphasised the budget’s importance in Somalia’s path to economic recovery, particularly in the context of debt forgiveness. “Today’s approval is a testament to the Parliament’s commitment to our constitutional duties and the crucial goal of debt relief,” he said.
Finance Minister Mr. Bihi Iman Cige expressed his appreciation to the Parliament members. He spotlighted the budget’s critical role in the forthcoming Debt Relief Process, an anticipated event next Wednesday, which is expected to lead to the forgiveness of all outstanding debts owed by Somalia.
