(11-12-23) MOGADISHU (HN) — Federal Minister of Interior, Federal Affairs, and Reconciliation, Mr Ahmed Moallin Fiqi, introduced the inaugural reading of the 2023 Refugee and Asylum Seeker Legislation Draft to the Upper House senators. Acknowledging the Upper House leadership and senators, Minister Fiqi highlighted the comprehensive structure of the proposed legislation, which includes 7 chapters and 38 articles across 32 pages.
In his presentation, Minister Fiqi emphasised the legislation’s adherence to both the national Constitution and international standards, remarking, “The draft is anchored in Article 37 of the Provisional Constitution concerning Refugees and Asylum Seekers. It is also in line with international treaties and conventions on refugee and asylum seeker issues, of which Somalia is a signatory, as elaborated in the latter section of this draft’s introduction.”
Elaborating on the specifics, Mr Fiqi detailed the various chapters and clauses of the 2023 Refugee and Asylum Seeker Legislation Draft for the Senate’s consideration.
Concluding his address, Minister Fiqi appealed to the Upper House Speaker and senators for their endorsement of the draft, which has already received approval from the House of the People of the Federal Parliament.
