(16-12-23) MOGADISHU (HN) — The Somali National Army, in collaboration with local forces, has launched a significant offensive against Al-Shabaab militants in the mountainous Yacgoos area of Mudug region, military sources confirmed today.
The operation, which involves encircling the area and carrying out intensive military activities, aims to dismantle Al-Shabaab’s long-standing stronghold in the region. This development is part of a broader strategy to counter the militant group’s influence in Somalia.
Al-Shabaab, recognised internationally as a terrorist organisation, is reportedly defending its positions in the Yaqgoos mountains against the advancing Somali army and local militia. This has significantly escalated regional tensions, causing concern among residents about the potential for widespread conflict.
In recent days, Mudug’s regional forces, supported by the central government’s troops, have intensified their campaign against Al-Shabaab. A pivotal moment in this campaign was the recent clash over a key hilltop base named Badbad, located near the Hararardhere district in the south of the Mudug region.
The ground offensive is being supplemented by aerial strikes targeting Al-Shabaab operatives in the region’s dense jungle terrain.
This ongoing military effort in Central Somalia marks a crucial stage in the fight against Al-Shabaab, with forces achieving significant territorial gains following deployment.
