(16-12-23) MOGADISHU (HN) — The Somali Armed Forces court sentenced two men, Abdiqani Adan Ali (Cilmi) and Ahmed Ali Diriye (Macallin Ahmed), to eight years in military prison for their affiliations with the Daesh group. Both individuals were formerly associated with Al-Shabaab before aligning with Daesh in Mogadishu.

A press statement from the Military Court on Saturday detailed the roles played by the duo in Al-Shabaab and their allegiance to ISIS. The court highlighted their active engagement in propagating extremist ideologies, frequently using public communication platforms such as Telegram.

The arrest of Abdiqani on 16 October marked a critical juncture in this case. He was apprehended while transporting two F1 bombs intended for Ahmed Ali Diriye, who was located at the Al-Nur Mosque in the Dabkayo Madow area of the Dharkenley district. Further investigations led to the discovery of additional materials for bomb-making in Abdiqani’s residence.

This case, which commenced on 11 December 2023, saw the Military Court Prosecution Office pushing for a swift and decisive trial. Presided over by Major Hassan Ali Nur Shute, the judiciary allowed ample time for both the defence and the prosecution to present their arguments.

The verdict, imposing an eight-year military prison term for both Abdiqani Adan Ali (Cilmi) and Ahmed Ali Diiriye (Macalim Ahmed), is part of a recent trend by the Somali Military Court. The court has been notably increasing the severity of sentences for members of Al-Shabaab and Daesh captured by the Federal Government of Somalia, signalling a firm stance against terrorism and a commitment to maintaining national security.
