(21-12-23) MOGADISHU (Halqabsi News) — In a violent confrontation late Wednesday, Al-Shabaab militants engaged Somali government forces in the Lower Shabelle region, resulting in several casualties and the capture of two soldiers, according to security officials.
The clash occurred as the soldiers were travelling from Number-Konton area towards Marka city. Al-Shabaab militants ambushed them between Buulonagey and Jilib-Marka, leading to a fierce 30-minute firefight. Initial reports indicate that the government forces managed to kill five Al-Shabaab fighters but eventually were overwhelmed due to a lack of ammunition.
One soldier from the government side was killed during the battle. The other two, identified as Musa Hassan Abdi and Aweys Hassan Abshir from the 14 October brigade, along with Mohamed Ahmed Mohamud of the Lower Shabelle regional security, were captured by the militants. It is reported that they were taken to an undisclosed location within the Mubarak area, severely wounded but alive.
This incident marks another episode in the ongoing conflict between the Somali government and Al-Shabaab militants, who have been waging an insurgency for years. The Lower Shabelle region, where the clash took place, is known as a contested zone with frequent skirmishes.
The Somali government, supported by international allies, continues its efforts to suppress Al-Shabaab’s influence in the region. However, the group remains a formidable force, often launching surprise attacks against government and civilian targets.
The fate of the captured soldiers remains uncertain, and there are ongoing efforts to secure their release. This event further illustrates the challenging security situation in Somalia, where government forces are regularly engaged in battles against militant groups.
