(03-01-24) MOGADISHU (Halqabsi News) — Members of the parliamentary friendship committee for Iraq today elected officials in a move expected to enhance diplomatic relations between the two countries. State media Sonna reported. Somalia’s bicameral parliamentary committee appointed Senator Sareedo Mohamed Hassan Jayte as its chair, Saeed Mohamed Mohamud as its vice chair, and Faisa Mohamed Jayte as the committee’s secretary.
The election, which was held in Villa Hargeisa, marks a new foreign policy approach that seeks to strengthen Somalia’s fledgling international diplomacy and cooperation. The elected members promised that they would strive to strengthen the traditional relationship between the two parliaments of Somalia and Iraq and the brotherly people of the two countries.
Last year, the Speakers of the two houses of the federal parliament of Somalia announced the formation of friendship committees for China, Iraq, and the United Arab Emirates. The establishment of these committees underscores Somalia’s commitment to building robust partnerships with key global players, one that is expected to facilitate a wide range of bilateral initiatives, from economic development to cultural exchanges, and contribute to peace and stability.
