Minister Aweys accused Ethiopia of undermining Somalia’s independence and flouting international law. “Somalia has taken a decisive stance against Ethiopia’s ambitions that threaten our nation’s sovereignty and the rule of law on an international scale,” Aweys stated.
The minister criticised Ethiopia for its dealings with the Somaliland administration in northern Somalia, describing them as a violation of Somalia’s territorial integrity and a threat to regional stability. “Ethiopia’s unilateral actions not only disregard Somalia’s sovereignty but also endanger the peace of the entire Horn of Africa and the wider world,” Aweys remarked.
The OIC meeting also addressed the situation in Gaza, with Aweys highlighting the need for Islamic countries to unite in advocating for a Palestinian state based on the 1967 borders to resolve the Palestinian issue and end the violence against the Palestinian people by Israel. “The establishment of a Palestinian state within the 1967 borders is essential for addressing the Palestinian cause and halting the genocide and destruction perpetrated by Israel,” he said.
Aweys also pointed out the issue of biased reporting on the Gaza conflict, criticising Western media’s pro-Israel stance as a violation of human rights and journalistic neutrality. “The misrepresentation of news concerning Gaza in Western media is a grave infringement of human rights and the principles of free speech and neutrality in journalism,” Aweys added.
The conference concluded with a collective condemnation of the violence against journalists in Gaza, where, according to Aweys, nearly 100 journalists have been killed by Israeli forces.
