(25-02-24) MOGADISHU (Halqabsi News) — Following a significant disruption in Somalia’s airspace, the Federal Government of Somalia’s Civil Aviation Authority (SCAA) issued an urgent statement, affirming its control over the nation’s skies. The announcement was made in light of Saturday’s incident that threatened the safety of commercial flights, sparking concerns among the public and airlines alike.

In a confident declaration to reassure stakeholders, the SCAA announced, “The Somali Civil Aviation Authority assures all the Somali people and the airlines that use the airspace of Somalia that it is in full control of the safety of the flights that use the airspace of Somalia.” This statement is a direct response to fears raised by the near-collision of two international flights.

Furthermore, the authority sought to alleviate any remaining anxieties by stating, “There is no security and safety risk in the airspace of Somalia.” This comes as a significant reassurance to airlines and passengers, given the recent scare.

The incident that prompted this reassurance involved two passenger planes, operated by Qatar Airways and Ethiopian Airlines, which nearly collided due to an error in flight directions. Originating from Addis Ababa and Doha, the aircraft were en route to Kampala, Uganda, and Dubai, United Arab Emirates, when they were mistakenly directed into each other’s path over Somalia’s northern airspace.

Sources informed Halqabsi News that the mishap resulted from incorrect orders allegedly issued in Hargeisa. Thanks to the alertness of the pilots and onboard collision avoidance systems, a disaster was narrowly avoided, safeguarding the lives of numerous passengers.
