(22 March 2024) MOGADISHU (Halqabsi News) — The Office of the Attorney General of Somalia released 116 inmates from the Mogadishu Prison and Court Complex (MPCC) in Ex-Control Afgooye on Friday. The individuals, convicted of minor offences, have been granted presidential amnesty, a gesture that aligns with the Holy Month and reflects the state’s dedication to rehabilitation and humane practices within the criminal justice system.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Farhan Hussein Mohamed, in his address to the freed individuals, encouraged them to seize this opportunity for positive transformation. He expressed gratitude towards President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud for his benevolence and highlighted the significance of the amnesty in facilitating social reintegration.
The amnesty primarily benefited young inmates, who, during their incarceration, were provided with access to free medical care, educational opportunities, and recreational facilities. These provisions, by the Attorney General’s Office guidelines, aim to uphold the rights of prisoners and support their rehabilitation.
This act of clemency is part of broader initiatives intended to cultivate a spirit of forgiveness within the community and to aid the reintegration of former inmates into society. The Somali government calls on local communities and authorities to embrace and support these individuals as they embark on their new chapters in life.
