(23 March 2024) MOGADISHU (Halqabsi News) — Early Saturday, Al-Shabaab militants orchestrated devastating attacks on two army bases in Aw-Maki and Dhanaane, military sources reported. The surprise pre-dawn strikes resulted in significant casualties, catching many troops off-guard during their rest.
The initial assault targeted the Military Police base in the village of Jilib Marka, sparking a violent confrontation. Major Liban Mohamed Abdulle (Golcad), a high-ranking officer in charge of security around the Mogadishu area, was killed alongside ten other soldiers. The battle was characterized by direct engagements and explosive detonations, highlighting the intensity of the attack.
Shortly thereafter, the Haramad army’s stronghold in Dhanaane came under siege. In a fierce clash that ensued, Al-Shabaab militants briefly took control of the base, setting fire to the encampments and further destabilizing the region.
The attacks have significantly heightened tensions, with ongoing skirmishes reported in the affected locales. Despite the escalating violence, the Somali government has yet to make an official statement regarding the situation or the losses incurred.
These assaults come amid a backdrop of persistent military operations by Somali forces, including the military police and Harammad special forces, particularly on the outskirts of Mogadishu. This pattern of attacks by Al-Shabaab mirrors previous tactics to undermine regional security and governance.
