(21 April 2024) MOGADISHU (Halqabsi News) — Troops from the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) and the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF), stationed at the Bulmarer Forward Operating Base, have extended a helping hand to the community amidst a cholera outbreak in Buulo-Mareer, Lower Shabelle region. Led by Lt. Col. Don Naijuka, commander of the UPDF Zulu Battalion, the troops donated essential medical supplies to district health officials, aiming to bolster the local response efforts.
Expressing solidarity with the affected families, Lt. Col. Naijuka offered his condolences to those mourning the loss of loved ones and conveyed his hopes for a swift recovery to those still battling the illness. Dr. Muhammed Osman Ibrahim, the District Health Officer, gratefully acknowledged the timely assistance from the UPDF troops and voiced an urgent need for additional support to effectively contain the outbreak.
In a related effort, Brig. Seif Rashid, Sector 2 Commander, contributed an assortment of medicines to Dhobley General Hospital in the Lower Juba region, further demonstrating ATMIS’s commitment to healthcare support across Somalia. The donations were complemented by medical screenings and treatments conducted by ATMIS KDF medics, led by Capt. (Dr) Jefwa Tsuma, for patients suffering from various ailments.
Additionally, Brig. Rashid engaged in a security briefing with regional leaders at Dhobley Police Station to discuss ongoing safety measures, highlighting the multifaceted approach of the mission. In parallel, Capt. Valerie Shikuku, Head of Female Engagement Teams, met with local women’s groups to recognize and support their efforts in empowering women within the community.
