(18-Feb-23) Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud of the Federal Republic of Somalia addressed the 36th African Heads of State Conference in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia today. In his speech, he expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to serve Somalia as its president for the second time.
President Mohamud emphasized his commitment to defeating international terrorism, strengthening inclusive politics, growing the economy, and delivering basic services to the people of Somalia. He shared his vision for building an environment for sustainable development based on the needs of the people, starting with how to maintain peace against the international terrorist organization Al-Shabaab with the cooperation of all international partners.
He also stressed the importance of inclusive politics, democracy, and strengthening relationships with civil society to ensure that everyone has a real role in society and its governance. He highlighted the need for cooperation in dealing with global systemic challenges such as fighting terrorism, climate change, economic growth, job creation, and financing of the world’s development agenda.
President Mohamud underscored his commitment to working with the African Union, member states, and all friends of Somalia to make the country, Africa, and the world a safe, progressive, and prosperous place for all its citizens. He closed his speech by thanking everyone for their warm welcome and expressed his willingness to work together to make a better future for Somalia and Africa.
