(07-06-24) MOGADISHU (Halqabsi News) – Al-Shabaab militants have abducted approximately 20 Sufi scholars from the Ahlu-Sunna Waljamea group in Laantaburo, Lower Shabelle region. The scholars, who had gathered from across the country for religious ceremonies, were attacked while performing morning prayers.
According to eyewitnesses who spoke to Halqabsi News, many scholars managed to escape. Still, those who remained were taken by Al-Shabaab and transported towards the Jilib-Marka area, a known stronghold for the group.
There is growing concern for the safety of the abducted scholars, as Al-Shabaab has a history of targeting and killing those who oppose their extremist ideology. The Ahlu-Sunna Waljamea group, a Sufi sect, has been vocal in their opposition to Al-Shabaab and has previously engaged in armed conflict with the militants.
This latest kidnapping highlights the ongoing threat posed by Al-Shabaab to religious freedom and security in Somalia. The incident has also sparked confusion and fear within the locals, as it demonstrates the group’s willingness to target even those who share their Islamic faith.
