(08-06-24) MOGADISHU (Halqabsi News) – Early this morning, the town of Eeldheer was rocked by a major Al-Shabaab attack. The militants launched a coordinated assault from four directions, targeting Somali National Army and local Mawisley militia positions.
Despite the initial explosions and heavy gunfire, Somali forces, who had prior intelligence of the attack, were able to mount a strong defence. The government claims that the attack was repelled, inflicting significant casualties on Al-Shabaab.
Al-Shabaab, on the other hand, has claimed to have captured key military outposts and facilities in the town.
The situation in Eeldheer remains tense, with military movements ongoing. The district, a former Al-Shabaab stronghold liberated last year, is currently secured by elite Somali units including the Gorgor, Danab, and Mawisley local fighters.
This latest confrontation underlines the continued volatility in central Somalia and the challenges faced by the Somali government in maintaining security in areas previously under extremist control.
