(24-07-24) JOWHAR (Halqabsi News) – Hirshabelle Minister of Internal Affairs, Abdirahman Dahir Gure Karore, has addressed concerns regarding the large contingent of Ethiopian troops that recently entered the Hiran region. Minister Karore confirmed that the troops’ presence was known to Hirshabelle authorities and is linked to the planned withdrawal of Ethiopian soldiers who were part of the ATMIS mission in Mahaas district.
“The Ethiopian army that crossed the border at Ferfer, as we were informed, included both ATMIS troops and additional forces to assist their movement,” said Minister Karore. He clarified that the purpose of the troops’ presence was to ensure the safe passage of the withdrawing ATMIS contingent through Hiran.
The Minister further stated that Hirshabelle officials and local authorities had been in communication with the Ethiopian forces, who assured them of a peaceful transit.
“Yesterday they arrived, and today if they are leaving, we don’t require a separate notification. Their task is complete, and they are expected to depart,” added the Minister.
The presence of the Ethiopian troops, estimated to be around 6,000, has raised questions due to the significantly larger size compared to the 500 withdrawing ATMIS soldiers. However, Minister Karore’s explanation suggests that the extra troops were primarily for logistical and security support during the withdrawal process.
The Ethiopian government had previously submitted a request to the Somali government seeking permission for its troops to enter Somalia for this escort mission. The Somali government granted approval, aligning with the broader plan to reduce the ATMIS presence in the country.
