(06 Nov 2024) MOGADISHU (Halqabsi News) – President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud met German Chancellor Olaf Scholz in Berlin on Tuesday to strengthen Somalia-Germany ties ahead of the Germany-Africa Investment Summit. The discussions, part of President Hassan’s official visit, covered security, revitalising vocational training, expanding economic cooperation, climate action, and Somali refugee welfare.
The leaders discussed transitioning security responsibilities from the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) to Somali forces, with Germany pledging support to bolster Somalia’s police capabilities. Economic growth and climate action were also key agenda points, underscoring Germany’s commitment to Somalia’s stability.
Refugee welfare was a prominent topic, with Chancellor Scholz highlighting that Somali refugees have largely integrated into German society. However, he acknowledged challenges concerning individuals who lost asylum rights due to criminal activity.
President Mohamud assured Somali citizens in Germany of his government’s commitment to their rights under international asylum protections. He emphasised that while Somalia is ready to receive citizens who voluntarily return after losing asylum status, forced repatriation would not be pursued.
The meeting concluded with renewed commitments to bilateral cooperation, marking an important step in Somalia and Germany’s enduring partnership.
