(09 Nov 2024) MOGADISHU (Halqabsi News) — At least five Ugandan soldiers were reportedly killed in a recent attack by the militant group Al-Shabaab on a convoy of African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) troops traveling through the Lower Shabelle region in southern Somalia.
The ambush, described as a pre-planned operation by Al-Shabaab, took place near the town of Lambar 60, leading to a direct clash between militants and ATMIS forces. Al-Shabaab claimed responsibility for the attack, stating they had killed five Ugandan soldiers in total. However, these claims remain unverified by independent sources, and ATMIS has not yet issued any statement on the incident.
In a separate incident, Al-Shabaab launched an artillery strike last night on another ATMIS base in Bur-Ulow, near Barawe, as military tensions continue to rise across Lower Shabelle.
ATMIS forces have frequently been targeted by Al-Shabaab in this region, suffering several severe attacks in recent months, including a major assault in Bulo-Mareer that left at least 57 Ugandan soldiers dead.
