(24 Nov 2024) MOGADISHU (Halqabsi News) — The Federal Government of Somalia has announced ongoing efforts to repatriate Somali citizens rescued from the waters near Madagascar.
Minister of Information, Culture and Tourism, Daud Aweis, extended his condolences to the families of the 22 individuals who tragically lost their lives in the disaster. He confirmed that the 48 survivors are currently in the custody of Madagascar’s government.
Speaking at a press conference in Mogadishu, Minister Aweis revealed that Somali officials will be dispatched to Madagascar to assess the situation, verify the survivors’ origins, and facilitate their safe return.
He emphasised the government’s commitment to investigating the incident, warning against the dangers of illegal migration and smuggling operations. “Smuggling is a crime, and those involved must be held accountable. Somali youth are risking their lives by embarking on these perilous journeys,” he stated.
This incident highlights the urgent need for stronger measures to address human trafficking and irregular migration, which continue to endanger Somali lives.
