(27-Feb-23) Mogadishu, Somalia – A bomb blast hit an ATMIS troop convoy on the outskirts of Marka, the capital of the Lower Shabelle region on Monday, according to reports received today. The explosive attack occurred earlier today and is believed to have been triggered by a mine. Eyewitnesses confirmed the incident, revealing that the convoy was ambushed by an explosive device as it made its way through the area.
Sources further stated that following the blast, the ATMIS forces retaliated with gunfire. It is unclear what caused the gunfire and the explosion that occurred prior. However, the situation has since calmed down, and the affected forces have continued with their journey.
At the time of reporting, neither the Marka district administration nor the general command of ATMIS had released any official statements concerning the incident.
Al-Shabaab has been carrying out subsequent attacks targeting African Union Peacekeeping mission and Somali forces in the region.
