Mogadishu, Somalia – Laascaanood clashes displaced of over 80,000 people in the Somali region of Laascaanood, exacerbating the existing drought crisis in Sool and Sanaag. UN Resident Coordinator and Humanitarian Coordinator for Somalia, Adam Abdelmoula, reported dozens of civilian casualties and emphasized the need for respecting international human rights law and international humanitarian law (where applicable).
In a tweet, Abdelmoula called for an investigation into law violations and accountability for those responsible. The UN and other humanitarian organizations are providing aid, however, the situation remains dire with civilians in need of food, water, and medical care.
Local hospitals reported 60 deaths, including women and children, on the second day of fighting between Somaliland forces and Laascaanood residents. The international community is urging a de-escalation of violence and a peaceful resolution of tensions. The protection of civilians must be prioritized and those responsible held accountable.
