(24-03-23) Bardhere – The city of Bardheere, situated in the Gedo region of Somalia, has been severely affected by flooding as the Jubba River burst its banks following hours of torrential rain. Flash floods have inundated the city, leaving approximately 80% of it submerged. The most recent flood has resulted in the loss of at least eight lives, including a mother and her two children. Consequently, many residents have been forced to evacuate their homes.
Members of Parliament Mursal Khalif and Abdulahi Aden Kulane have made an urgent appeal to the Federal Government Agencies of Somalia and the international community, stressing the critical need for national and international emergency assistance. Kulane took to Twitter, urging humanitarian agencies and Somalis worldwide to help those affected: “I call on humanitarian Agencies and Somalis worldwide to help the affected people.” Over the past ten days, Bardheere has experienced two floods, which have led to the death of more than 20 people. Additionally, two terrorist attacks have taken place during the same timeframe, resulting in 14 casualties.
As Bardheere grapples with the ongoing crises, the calls for immediate support from MPs Mursal Khalif and Abdulahi Aden Kulane highlight the necessity of a prompt and coordinated effort from both local authorities and international aid organizations.
