(9-Mar-23) Mogadishu – A significant event took place in Mogadishu as the unveiling of a new book entitled “The Battle of Mogadishu” written by Dr. Mohamud Abdi Ilmi. This is the first book on the war in Mogadishu written by a Somali author and is a historic moment for the country. Dr. Ilmi served as the private secretary of General Mohamed Farah Aideed during the conflict.
The book offers a comprehensive account of the 1993 Battle of Mogadishu, also known as the Ranjarisa War, which occurred from June 5th to October 3rd, 1993. The unveiling took place at the Jazeera Hotel in Mogadishu and was attended by several leaders and participants of the war, including the private secretaries of General Aideed and fighters from that time.
Mu’min Tuurre Abdullahi, who lost his sister during the conflict, wrote on Facebook that his sister was killed by an American soldier while she was a civilian on the road and her parents received no compensation for their loss.
General Indhacadde, who was part of the war, spoke at the unveiling and expressed support for the book, stating, “I am not afraid of the United States. I have no animosity towards the US and was involved in the conflict against Rangers.” He emphasized the importance of the book in telling the story of the war from a Somali point of view.
The unveiling of “The Battle of Mogadishu” has generated great excitement among Somalis who are eager to learn more about the events surrounding the battle. Some social media users have suggested that the book be incorporated into the school curriculum and taught as part of the history of the struggle.
