(13-04-23) MOGADISHU – The government of Somaliland a breakaway from Somalia and the government of China have once again found themselves at odds, this time over the issue of Taiwan, further straining their already tense diplomatic relationship.
The latest tension was sparked by a statement from the Somaliland Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which criticized China’s recent military exercise near Taiwan. The ministry’s tweet read, “A country’s existent national borders are to be respected and protected against terrorism infiltration or external threats, but China’s drills are, in fact, breaking the Taiwan Strait status quo.”
In addition to its criticism, the Somaliland government expressed support for Taiwan, stating that it stands by the protection and defense of Taiwan’s territory. “Somaliland stands strong with Taiwan and are united with fellow democracies.” the Somaliland foreign ministry added.
In response, China’s ambassador to Somalia, FEI Shengchao, issued a fiery retort on Twitter. Ambassador FEI called the statement from Somaliland a “laughingstock” and likened the situation to a family that has created an artificial border within their home. “Thank you for your support. National borders must be respected, but don’t make oneself a laughingstock by making “national borders” where there is none. Common sense families don’t draw borders inside a house.” wrote Ambassador FEI.
The relationship between China and Somaliland has been fraught with tension, particularly after Hargeisa, led by President Muse Bihi, established contact with Taiwan. China considers Taiwan to be part of its territory and has vehemently opposed any official interactions between the self-governing island and other nations. This latest exchange of heated words underscores the ongoing diplomatic rift between the two governments.
Thank you for your support. National borders must be respected, but don't make oneself a laughingstock by making "national borders" where there is none. Common sense families don't draw borders inside a house.
